After a record year for 2020 nominations, the Saskatchewan big game draw is expected to open for 2021 on May 1, the province announced on April 26.

Hunters have until 11:59 p.m. on May 25 to submit their application online.

"The big game raffle continues to be extremely popular with hunters in this province," Environment Minister Warren Kaeding said in a statement.

"In 2020, the ministry received almost 115,000 requests and we anticipate another busy year.

While the raffle opportunity is provided in anticipation of the fall hunting season, applicants should be aware of the unforeseeable circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and should be prepared to follow all public health orders.

"The ministry continues to work with the hunting community to improve the process and encourages all hunters to apply early," Kaeding added.

"Game populations in many areas are doing very well. This means that elk, mule deer and white-tailed deer hunting opportunities will be increased in some areas. "

The 2021 Big Game Draw Supplement provides Saskatchewan resident hunters with information on the seasons and quotas for randomly drawn species, as well as advance notice of any changes to the regular big game seasons this fall.

The application process remains largely unchanged from last year. Application information, priority pools, Wildlife Management Zone (WMZ) quotas, and detailed application instructions are available at: www.saskatchewanlicences.active.com.

Hunters are also advised to apply early and use the online residency verification tool to avoid complications. The raffles for multiple species receive a high number of applications compared to the number of licenses available. In these cases, the chances of being drawn will be low, even for applications from the top priority pool.

Hunters who are concerned that they may not be able to hunt due to the pandemic may consider submitting a "Zone 99" request. This allows the applicant to retain their pool status without being drawn for a license. Hunters should also be aware that there is no refund for the Big Game Draw entry fee.

The Big Game Draw is administered through the Saskatchewan Hunting, Angling and Trapping (HAL) licensing system. Customers can submit, review and update their requests, check historical pool status, and purchase a draw license through their HAL accounts.

Draw results will be available on HAL accounts in mid-June, with the exception of pronghorn, which will be available in mid-July. Applicants are responsible for checking their own draw results.

Successful applicants can purchase licenses through their HAL accounts as of August 1, 2021.

For more information on your HAL account or for assistance completing an application, please call 1-888-773-8450. If you have questions about the status of your pool or hunting in Saskatchewan, call the Ministry of the Environment information line at 1-800-567-4224.
